Longship launched, full steam ahead for capture & storage

Among recent encouraging developments in the CCUS area, one of the most significant is the positive final investment decision taken, after considerable deliberation, by the Norwegian government in favour of a major full-chain CCS project, now called Longship (in Norwegian ‘Langskip’). The total cost, capital plus ten years of operation, is estimated at 25.1 billion NOK ($2.7 billion), with the Norwegian government contributing 16.8 billion NOK ($1.8 billion).

New energy storage project will be one of world’s largest

Independent energy company InterGen, based in Edinburgh, has been granted consent for the UK’s largest battery energy storage project. The project is more than ten times the size of the UK’s current largest operational project and will be one of the world’s largest. It will provide fast-reacting power and system balancing to support the integration of renewable energy sources and is a significant piece of system architecture critical to the UK’s transition to Net Zero.

Contract for the 174 MW Asahan 3 hydro plant is awarded

Voith Hydro has been awarded by Mitsubishi Corporation the electro-mechanical equipment contract for the Asahan 3 hydropower project in Indonesia, which will be operated by the state-owned utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). The project is supported and financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Hitachi ABB launches first HV hybrid switchgear for offshore

Hitachi ABB Power Grids' latest high-voltage hybrid switchgear for offshore wind applications is the first-of-its-kind to enable the wind tower connecting grid to operate at a higher voltage level. Offshore wind turbines typically operate at 5 MW and 33 kV, but the growing demand for renewable energy and the corresponding increase in WTG rating has raised the maximum to 14 MW, a capability that is expected to reach 20 MW by 2030. Hitachi ABB has introduced a 72.5 kV high-voltage hybrid switchgear, ‘M00 – Wind’, using its plug and switch system (PASS).

Greencoat to acquire Cloghan and Taghart windfarms

Greencoat Renewables, the renewable infrastructure company, is to acquire the Cloghan and Taghart windfarms from Statkraft under a forward sale model for a combined consideration of €123 million. Construction of the wind farms is scheduled to begin shortly, with the acquisition due for completion once each wind farm is fully operational, expected in late 2022.

LevelTen Energy announces new RE-Store energy agreement

On 17 December LevelTen Energy announced its new RE-Store Energy Agreement, an innovative financial contract that enables corporations and Load-Serving Entities “easier access to the economic and risk-reducing benefits of energy storage projects.” The agreement, developed in collaboration with EnergyGPS, opens the door to billions of dollars of investment in large-scale energy storage projects by providing buyers a practical way to contract with storage developers, and by guaranteeing a revenue stream to developers to support project financing.

GenCell Energy to supply long-duration backup power to CFE Mexico

GenCell Energy, the Israel-based manufacturer of fuel cell energy solutions, has announced that following participation in an international tender for backup for substations executed by Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) the state-owned and largest utility in Mexico, GenCell has been selected to deploy its hydrogen-based DC backup solutions for CFE substations. The company has been contracted for delivery and two years of service and maintenance of 37 hydrogen-based fuel cells to substations across Mexico in a deal valued at approximately US$6 million.

Ansaldo wins €50 m turbine contract in Poland

Ansaldo Energia has been awarded a contract for the supply of an 80 MW AE64.3 gas turbine and the related maintenance contract to a value of approximately €50 m from Synthos, a Polish chemical company, a leading producer of rubbers and polymers.

UK government to end support for overseas fossil fuel projects

The UK government has announced that it will end direct support for fossil fuel projects overseas ‘with very limited exceptions’. The announcement came at the virtual Climate Ambition Summit, on 12 December, which the UK co-hosted with the UN and France.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids energises NordLink

On 9 December Hitachi ABB Power Grids announced energisation of the NordLink project, a 623 km long high voltage direct current interconnection that for the first time links German and Norwegian power markets and is the most powerful such interconnection in Europe. It marks a major milestone in Europe’s goal of linking national transmission grids to create an efficient and integrated energy market.

Accenture makes strategic investment in Reactive Technologies

Accenture has made a strategic investment and formed a strategic alliance with Reactive Technologies, a London-based provider of power and grid technology, to help utilities accelerate the transition to low-carbon energy.

Permits granted for Vesterhav Syd and Nord
16 December, 2020
On 14 December, the Danish Energy Agency approved Vattenfall's construction plans for, and environmental assessment of, the offshore wind farms Vesterhav Syd and Nord. The two arrays together will include 41 WTGs totalling 350 MW and increase Danish electricity production from wind turbines by around 10 %.
