Bridging the Brazilian power gap
01 January, 2010
The development of Brazil’s power infrastrucure has broken several world records. The next one will fall in 2012 when the world’s longest HVDC interconnector comes on line.

Corona shields for thyristor valves at ultra-high voltages
01 May, 2009
UHVDC operating levels present a particular challenge for the insulation of thyristor valves. AREVA T&D’s R&D teams have carried out electric field stress studies to determine the best profile for the corona shields, built a test object and subjected it to DC and switching impulse tests that validated the theoretical model. The end result after the next phase of development will be a new design of corona shield, suitable for DC applications up to 800 kV.

Vegetable or mineral? – transforming choices for DSOs
01 March, 2009
EdF has introduced an edible oil made from soya beans on to its grid reinforcement menu, and is currently trialling its qualities in comparative tests on two 132 kV distribution transformers in the UK.

Transforming failure to success in 22 days
01 May, 2008
When two of its three generator transformers at the 1.5 GW coal fired Aberthaw power station failed in quick succession, owner RWE found itself under extreme pressure to restore the 600 MVA, 275/22 kV units to service as quickly as possible without compromising technical quality and safety.

Areva bets on a carbon-free future

National Grid has decided to allocate a substantial part of its investment programme to upgrade and develop the electricity transmission network across England and Wales to a series of regionally focused collaborative partnerships that should help to achieve higher levels of quality and safety.

Early warning system
01 November, 2006
In response to increasing concerns about blackout risk, AREVA T&D has developed e-terravision, designed to be a reliable, user-friendly system that can anticipate powerline problems and enable operators to react in real time.

Rewiring China for the 21st century
23 June, 2004
Mapping out China’s electrical energy future faces two major roadblocks – rebuilding investor confidence after recent reneged power supply deals, and a transmission system several years behind the development of generation capacity

No longer a purely Scandinavian affair
