Violent wind and snow storms have brought widespread death, destruction and disruption of the vital power supply to areas of east Ukraine and western Russia. Nearly 2500 people were rescued after a snowstorm in Ukraine's southern region of Odesa, local governor Oleh Kiper reported, adding that 313 settlements in the region were without power as a result of the bad weather.

The German and Italian governments have agreed to expand energy co-operation in order to strengthen supply security and the transition to climate neutrality, with gas and hydrogen pipelines across the Alps a key element, reports online agency Clean Energy Wire. At a recent meeting of members of the two governments in Berlin, chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasised that expanding the natural gas and hydrogen transport infrastructure connecting the two countries – which do not share a border – would be “particularly important.” “With a new pipeline across the Alps, we want to increase the security of supply of both our countries,” said Scholz.

The French CRE (Commission for the Regulation of Energy) has published the results of its latest call to tender for onshore wind power (AO 13) for a cumulative capacity of 931 MW for an average price of €86.94/MWh. Five projects have been awarded to RWE, representing 119 MW gross and 80 MW pro-rata. Of these winning projects, three are solely owned by RWE and two will be developed jointly with Vent du Nord and David Energies/Energiter. Across 13 French onshore wind power tenders, RWE has secured a total of 384 MW, making it the third most awarded company.

The order consists of 53 V163-4.5 MW wind turbines, and the contract includes supply, delivery, and commissioning of the turbines, as well as a multi-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement, designed to help ensure optimised performance of the asset. Closing the $18 trillion gap to fund the green energy transition through to 2030 is being slowed by negative investment conditions according to a report from the consulting group BCG. Challenges include inflation, supply chain constraints and pressures, and higher costs of capital. However, the energy sector has responded proactively. Total energy sector transactions exceeding $320 billion so far in 2023 show that the industry is fine-tuning capital frameworks for the energy transition. The assessment comes from a publication released on 20 November by the Boston Consulting Group Centre for Energy Impact. Titled ‘Bridging the $18 Trillion Gap in Net Zero Capital’, the report is based on an analysis of 260 of the world's largest energy companies across power and utilities, oil and gas, and private equity.
