DoE funds carbon sequestration

8 November 2006

The programme will support seven tests designed to advance carbon sequestration technologies and validate whether the large scale capture, transportation, injection, and long term storage of carbon dioxide can be done safely, permanently, and economically.

DoE will work with the existing Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships to develop the large volume sequestration tests, the results from which will be crucial to the development of the FutureGen coal-fired power plant. The geologic structures that will be tested during these large volume sequestration tests could be candidate sites for FutureGen-type plants.

The Partnerships have preliminarily identified sequestration opportunities across the US estimated to have the potential to store more than 600 billion tonnes of CO2, equivalent to more than 200 years of current US emissions.
