Microgeneration push for the UK

17 May 2007

The funding is available for technologies including biomass, ground source heat pumps, solar thermal and photovoltaic, and small scale hydro among others. The Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) has already allocated £6.8 million ($13.6 million) in grants to householders and, following the addition an extra £6 million ($12 million) announced in the latest budget, applications for the remaining £11.9 million ($24 million) will be open from the end of May.

The grant scheme had been put on hold in March and has been re-launched with a number of changes such as removal of a monthly cap on funds and a new requirement to have planning permission before applying.

Since April 2006 the LCBP has directly funded 2,175 domestic installations including 242 mini-turbines, 313 Solar PV projects and 1,467 solar thermal heating systems. The scheme is part of a wider programme worth £86 million ($172 million) that will also award grants for larger installations in schools and other public buildings.
