The company was awarded the contract by Neptune Regional Transmission System on behalf of the local utility Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). The submarine HVDC system, which carries 660 MW at 500 kV, will Long Island to receive power from the grid of New Jersey.
The project was carried out by a consortium of Siemens and Prysmian Cables and Systems, which designed, manufactured, supplied and installed the complete set of HVDC equipment including converter valves, converter transformers, smoothing reactors, high voltage switchgears as well as communication and control equipment. Siemens was also responsible for the construction of valve halls and operations buildings and will also provide operation and maintenance services for the first five years.
Prysmian supplied and installed a total of 105 km of submarine and subterranean cable.
The total contract value was some €350 million, with the Siemens’ share approximately €180 million.
