Siemens Energy is to supply gas and steam turbine technology for the 2.6 GW Taweelah C IPP project in Abu Dhabi. The combined-cycle plant is being developed to provide flexible, dispatchable power for the UAE grid.

The scope of supply includes three SGT5-9000HL gas turbines, two SST5-5000 steam turbines, five generators (SGen5-3000W and SGen5-2000P), and associated auxiliary systems.

Siemens Energy says the plant will help stabilise the grid and support larger shares of renewable energy, while also being designed with a future pathway for carbon capture and storage.

The project is being developed by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company and Sembcorp Industries, with China Energy Engineering Group Corporation serving as EPC contractor and EWEC as the sole power purchaser.

Siemens Energy said the deal includes the first HL-class gas turbine in the UAE, a milestone it claims will add high-performance generation to the country’s energy system.
