Dawson Keith won a contract to design, manufacture and install a genset to supply 1.8 MWe power to the UK’s Ministry of Defence.
The critical factor was achieving an effective interface between the genset and the 11 kV switchgear. This allows automatic control of the genset, including short-time paralleling with the mains supply, for no-break transfer of the load for test and restoration after a mains failure.
Dawson Keith used a Perkins 4016TAG1 engine and Newage HVSI 824C two-bearing alternator to develop a power rating of 1826 kVA.
The unit is enclosed in a walk round drop-over acoustic canopy, with an external noise level of 75 dBA at 1 m using end-mounted air inlet and outlet attenuators and roof-mounted engine exhaust silencers.
