Perkins Engines has launched its new 400 series range of compact diesel engines. The first in the series will be the 2.2 litre, 37 kW 404C-22 model. There is also a turbocharged version, the 404C-22T, which produces 45 kW.

The performance of the 404C-22 engine delivers a 5 per cent increase in power and torque compared with its predecessor. Perkins were also at pains to point out that the new model is significantly smaller. Perkins claims that the life cycle cost of the engine is reduced by £1100 over the engine life. The engine is designed to provide distributed generation, with users such as restaurants, hotels and offices being obvious potential customers.

The new design achieves this by the following means: Changes in the design of the fuel pump.

Opening up the cross-sectional area of the throat and using a steeper angle in order to reduce pumping losses.

Improved lubrication circuit.

Optimisation of injectors matched to the combustion system.

The size of the engine has been reduced from 0.22 m3 to 0.19 m3. Service intervals have been increased to 500 hours. In addition, lubricating oil consumption has been reduced to 0.2 per cent of fuel consumed, and noise levels across the operating range have been reduced by 3.5 dB(A), and a reduction of 5 db(A) at low idle speed.

Low emissions are achieved by the combined introduction of a new Compact Timing Device (CTD) to the fuel injection pump, and redesign of the combustion chamber. The CTD reduces initial injection rates and delivers improved timing control. This reduces NOx emissions and noise, as well as improving the performance of the engine when starting from cold. Other features such as injectors and high pressure pipes have been optimised.

In addition, the 400 series incorporates a closed circuit breather (CCB). This prevents crankcase fume from escaping into the environment. One potential problem with CCB’s is their limitation on engine operating angle. This CCB has a continuous gradeability of 35°, an improvement of 10°.
