At the same time, AI workloads introduce rapid, large-scale fluctuations in power demand. If not managed properly, these dynamic load patterns can disrupt voltage and frequency stability, delay grid connections, and increase stress on critical infrastructure.
In response, ABB has launched a pre-engineered, modular synchronous condenser package designed to help operators overcome these grid constraints, enabling faster deployment while maintaining reliable power system performance.
ABBs’s new prepackaged synchronous condenser offering addresses this stability challenge at the connection point. It provides instantaneous inertia and dynamic reactive power to stabilise voltage and frequency in real time – helping absorb sudden load swings and prevent disturbances from spreading across the network.

For operators, this translates into clear benefits, suggests ABB:

The fully integrated modular solution combines a predefined foundation, synchronous condenser, flywheel, starting system, lube-oil system, configurable cooling options, auxiliaries, e-house, and noise enclosure as an option, in a compact, standardised package.
The flywheel is specifically designed for stabilisation of electrical networks and features an integrated safety enclosure, ie, no extra safety barriers are needed. The single-source delivery across mechanical, electrical and control systems reduces on-site complexity, shortens installation timelines, and streamlines the path from project planning to operation, says ABB – providing greater certainty throughout the project lifecycle.

A recent significant development in ABB’s syncons for datacentres business was the award of a further order by VoltaGrid – Texas-based microgrid power generation technology company – this time for 35 synchronous condensers with flywheel and associated prefabricated e-house units.
These are in addition to the 27 being supplied to VoltaGrid under a previous agreement.
The synchronous condensers will provide stabilisation for VoltaGrid’s behind-the-meter microgrid power solutions, “enabling the voltage stability required by next-generation AI chips.”
