The operators of the Alpha Ventus offshore wind farm are investigating the cause of damage to one of the turbines at the site.
Alpha Ventus said in a statement that the rear part of a nacelle of an Adwen M5000 turbine broke off and fell into the sea at the 60 MW wind farm, located 60 km from the coast of Borkum in Germany.
The faulty turbine has been shut down and the wind farm’s other 11 units have been placed in idling mode, it added. The cause of the incident is “unexplained” and no danger or damage to persons or the environment has been reported.
Alpha Ventus comprises six Adwen M5000 units and six Senvion 5M units, mounted on jacket foundations. The wind farm was one of the first offshore projects to be built in Germany and is owned by EWE, E.On and Vattenfall.
