US company Besicorp-Empire has filed formal applications for development of a cogeneration and recycled newsprint facility in the City of Rensselaer, New York state. The plant, which requires authorisation for both its power generation and its recycling elements, is intended to have a capacity of around 500 MW based on natural gas. The recycling portion of the project will be capable of producing 300 000t of newsprint each year, with all steam and electrical requirements produced from the on-site cogeneration facility. Commercial operation is tentatively scheduled for 2004.
