The redundant coalfields of the east Midlands in the UK are being used to provide power for gas-fired power plants.
Two mines are already being tapped for methane, one of which is used to power a gas-fired power plant.
The East Midlands Development Agency and Coalgas have developed the extraction process and Independent Energy, the electricity supplier, to develop more.
A second electricity project will be launched at Shirebrook in Derbyshire.
