Brazilian transmission utility Eletronorte is planning to improve power supplies in the northeast of the country through the installation of a static var compensation (SVC) solution from ABB.

Eletronorte has placed an order worth $20 million with the European engineering firm to design, supply, install and commission an SVC unit in São Luis, in the Maranhão region of Brazil.

The new unit will not only help to boost electricity supplies through the existing 230 kV transmission lines, it will also control the previously installed SVC at the São Luís II substation.

ABB has previously supplied FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) technology to Electronorte and is also currently executing the Vilhena SVC project.

“This environmentally friendly solution will enable more power to flow through existing transmission lines and will also improve grid stability,” said Martin Gross, head of ABB’s Grid Systems business.
