ENGIE has teamed up with energy storage provider NHOA Energy to begin construction on a cutting-edge 400 MWh battery energy storage system in Kallo, Beveren, Begium. Once completed, the facility will be capable of delivering up to four hours of electricity storage – enough to power over 48,000 homes – while providing a crucial boost to the region’s grid stability.
This ambitious project follows ENGIE’s recent success in the Belgian grid operator Elia’s fourth Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auction. Under the terms of their agreement, NHOA Energy will supply and maintain the system for ENGIE, ensuring long-term reliability.
The new battery installation is taking shape on the grounds of the former Kallo power plant, which closed its doors in 2011. By transforming this legacy site, ENGIE and NHOA are not only breathing new life into old infrastructure but also supporting Belgium’s broader shift toward renewable energy. The storage system will help balance the grid as more wind and solar power comes online, offering much-needed flexibility during periods of high demand or intermittent generation.
With nearly two decades of experience in power electronics and energy storage, NHOA Energy is well-positioned to deliver a robust and secure system. Their expertise will be key to ensuring the new facility meets high standards for performance, resilience, and cybersecurity.
This project marks a significant step forward in Belgium’s energy transition, promising both environmental and economic benefits for the region.
