Equis Development has started commercial operation of a 40 MW hydrogen fuel cell power plant in Uijeongbu City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, adding a large-scale fuel cell CHP facility to the country’s hydrogen power generation programme.

The project entered commercial operation in March 2026, around 19 months after financial close and the start of construction in August 2024. Equis said construction was completed on schedule and within budget.

The plant is the largest fuel cell project awarded under South Korea’s Hydrogen Portfolio Standards (HPS) regime. It secured a 20-year electricity offtake agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) through the first HPS auction, providing contracted revenues for the plant’s electricity output.

The facility uses 90 Doosan Fuel Cell PureCell Model 400 phosphoric acid fuel cell units and is expected to generate approximately 300 GWh of electricity annually.

Heat produced by the CHP facility will also be recovered for district heating. More than 140,000 Gcal of heat a year will be supplied to Seoul Energy Corporation under a separate 20-year agreement.

According to Equis, the heat supply will avoid around 30,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions annually.

The project was selected in South Korea’s inaugural general hydrogen power auction in 2023, administered by the Korea Power Exchange (KPX). The HPS framework is intended to establish a dedicated market for electricity generated using hydrogen and related technologies.

Equis said the Uijeongbu facility is the first operating asset in its Korean hydrogen portfolio. The company plans to develop more than 200 MW of fuel cell and hydrogen generation capacity in South Korea, alongside its existing solar, battery storage and wind interests in Korea, Japan and Australia.

The project company, UH Power, received an environmental award from the Seoul Metropolitan Government in June for its contribution to renewable energy and cleaner energy use.
