The Finnish government decision to attempt the construction of a deep underground repository for spent nuclear fuel has been praised by lobbying organisations including Foratom, the trade association for the nuclear industry in Europe.
If parliament ratifies the decision then Finland is set to become the first country in the world to build a final repository for spent fuel, although Sweden and the USA are also making similar plans.
