Gotion has started delivery of battery storage systems for two large-scale projects in Egypt, which are set to become the country’s first standalone energy storage facilities and, once completed, among the largest of their kind in Africa.

On 28 September, 50 heavy-duty trucks carrying Gotion Grid 5 MWh storage systems departed from the company’s facilities in Jinzhai and Nantong in China. The shipment marks the start of full-scale equipment delivery for the Nefertiti and Horus projects.

The projects are being developed by AMEA Power and constructed by China Energy Engineering Group. They will provide grid-balancing capacity and support the integration of solar and wind generation in Egypt.

The storage systems will be deployed alongside existing renewable generation, including the Benban solar complex and the Zafarana wind farm. According to Gotion, the systems are configured for Egypt’s harsh environmental conditions, including high temperatures, sandstorms and salt fog. The company said the equipment provides millisecond-level response and high-voltage stability, with the projects intended to support solar power consumption and provide peak-shaving capacity for wind generation.

Gotion said the first shipment was completed within three months of the project agreement being signed.

“This shipment opens a new stage of broader cooperation,” said Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of AMEA Power. “We are proud and satisfied with our partnership with Gotion and are actively exploring new opportunities across the Middle East and Africa.”

Li Chen, senior vice-president of Gotion and president of Gotion Americas, said Egypt represents an important step for the company in the Middle East and North Africa, adding that the projects demonstrate its ability to provide storage systems and local operational support.

The projects form part of Egypt’s plans to expand renewable energy and increase the flexibility of its electricity system, supporting its 2030 clean energy objectives.
