Construction has started on a hydrogen connection at the former Moorburg power station site in Hamburg, Germany, linking planned local production with the city’s hydrogen distribution network and the emerging national hydrogen system.

Hamburger Energienetze is developing the H2-Connector as part of the planned Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Network (HH-WIN). The facility will connect hydrogen from local sources, including the 100 MW Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH), to HH-WIN and Gasunie’s planned national hydrogen network, Hyperlink.

The H2-Connector will include equipment to inject hydrogen into the network and a pressure regulation station, with a compressor station planned for a later phase. The infrastructure is being built at Moorburg, where the former coal-fired power station is being repurposed as part of Hamburg’s energy transition.

HH-WIN is planned as a roughly 40 km hydrogen distribution network serving industrial users in the port and elsewhere in the city, with plans to expand to 60 km by 2031. The network will enable hydrogen produced in Hamburg to reach industrial consumers while providing a connection to Germany’s wider hydrogen backbone.

The connector is being developed alongside HGHH, which is targeting operations in 2027. All electrolyser equipment for the project has now been delivered, according to recent industry reporting.

The H2-Connector is estimated to cost €22.6 million, including approximately €16.3 million in IPCEI funding.

The project is intended to provide the infrastructure needed to link hydrogen production, distribution and industrial demand as hydrogen use grows across Hamburg’s port and industrial sectors. Its connection to the national network could also enable hydrogen flows beyond the city.

Construction of the H2-Connector is expected to support the rollout of HH-WIN and associated hydrogen projects from 2027.
