Hitachi Energy has secured a contract to deliver automation equipment for Germany’s 900MW Nordseecluster B offshore wind project, operated by RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM).
Under the agreement, Hitachi Energy will supply its MicroSCADA system and related technical infrastructure, which will enable 60 wind turbines to connect directly to the offshore converter station operated by the local grid provider.
The power generated by these turbines will be transmitted to shore once the project becomes operational, scheduled for 2029.
Nordseecluster B is the second phase of an offshore wind development with a total capacity of 1.6GW.
RWE holds a 51% stake in the project, while NBIM owns the remaining 49%.
Once completed, the Nordseecluster project is expected to deliver electricity to an estimated 1.6 million households in Germany.
The project aims to contribute to the country’s ongoing transition towards greater energy independence.
Hitachi Energy previously supplied automation systems for the Nordseecluster A project, which featured offshore substations delivered by Chantiers de l’Atlantique under an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contract.
The MicroSCADA system enables wind farm operators to manage high-voltage connections and is compatible with third-party 66kV generator switchgear and supervisory control and data acquisition platforms.
Through integrated interfaces, the system supports communication between the onshore control centre, the transmission system operator and RWE’s trading teams, assisting in real-time operational management.
According to the agreement, the MicroSCADA solution will also adhere to the latest cybersecurity protocols to secure data exchange throughout the grid network.
RWE Nordseecluster managing director Sven Schulemann said: “Thanks to the collaboration with Hitachi Energy we will be able to integrate our Nordseecluster into the grid.
“With this 1.6GW cluster, RWE is significantly expanding its offshore wind portfolio and helping to deliver a reliable, clean and affordable energy system.”
Recently, Samsung C&T E&C Group extended its collaboration with Hitachi Energy to accelerate access to the European power grid market.
