Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity has awarded ABB a contract that will help to boost power supplies in the southern part of the country.

ABB will extend the 400/132 kV Amara substation, allowing a new 500 MW gas-fired power plant as well as a number of other, smaller power stations to be connected to the grid. The project will also improve the reliability of the transmission grid.

ABB will be responsible for project management, design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the substation, including civil works. The project is scheduled for completion by 2013.

Key product supplies include air-insulated switchgear, transformers, shunt reactors and cables. ABB will also supply control and protection systems compliant with the IEC 61850 open communications standard and associated telecommunication equipment.
