The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has kicked off a tender to procure large-scale energy storage systems.
The utility has issued a request for information (RFI) as the first step in plans to solicit up to 175 MW of battery energy storage capacity. The RFI asks for interested companies to submit “ideas, suggestions, and concepts on how best to configure, deploy and locate” battery storage on Long Island, New York state.
The RFI forms part of plans in New York state to achieve 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2040 and install 1500 MW of bulk energy storage by 2025.
“LIPA intends to meet its share of these goals, which amounts to approximately a 200 MW share of the 2025 statewide goal,” LIPA said in the RFI. A portion of that goal will be made up of existing energy storage contracts, behind-the meter programs and distribution-level storage projects, it added.
Responses to the RFI will assist in the development of a subsequent Request for Proposal (RFP) for energy storage resources planned to be issued later this year.
“We must take the next step to advance energy storage technology,” said Paul Napoli, vice president of Power Markets for PSEG Long Island. “Energy storage, strategically located across our service area, will be used to enhance reliability and help to provide a greener future for all Long Islanders.”
