The $440 million Phu My 2.2 gas-fired CCGT plant has begun full commercial operation after a successful test run. Located at the Phu My Power Complex in the Phu My Industrial Park, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, some 70 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, the 725 MW plant will supply some 7% of the country’s power capacity. The plant will be funded, built, and operated by Mekong Energy Co for the first 20 years under a BOT contract using two GE 9FAE gas turbines and one steam turbine. Its output will be sold exclusively to Electricity Vietnam (EVN) with the approximately 850 million cu.m of gas required annually coming from PetroVietnam and its Nam Con Son Basin field in southern Vietnam.

Phu My 2.2 is the first major private sector power project initiated by the Vietnamese government, construction of which began in August 2002.

Mekong is a consortium, comprising Electricite de France, Tokyo Electric Power and Sumitomo Corp.
