Sumitomo has won a contract to build a 35 MW geothermal power plant in Indonesia.
The Japanese industrial firm will build the new plant with PT Rekayasa Industri, an Indonesian engineering firm, for PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy. The plant is scheduled to start operating in 2015.
Indonesia is the world’s largest geothermal energy market by installed capacity but new projects have ground to a halt in recent years because of regulatory uncertainty and financing difficulties.
According to Sumitomo, the 35 MW project will form the fifth unit of the Kamojang geothermal station in Garut in West Java. Fuji Electric will supply the steam turbine for the plant.
