The Nigerian government is thought to have abandoned a plan to construct a new power plant. The decision, prompted by the Energy Programmes Reform Implementation Committee (EPRIC) is to pave the way for foreign investment in existing capacity.

EPRIC has also been lobbying for immediate consideration of a number of applications to establish power generation companies in Nigeria. It is believed that 37 applications have been received, mostly from foreign companies. Six have been shortlisted.

The government is aiming to establish 6000 MW of new capacity.
