Nordic Ren-Gas has agreed a long-term partnership with electrolysis specialist Sunfire, naming the German company a preferred supplier for electrolyser technology across its planned green hydrogen and e-methane projects in Finland.
The agreement builds on an existing relationship at Ren-Gas’ Tampere e-methane plant, where Sunfire is supplying a 50 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser. The Tampere project is intended to combine renewable hydrogen with captured biogenic CO2 to produce renewable methane for transport and other sectors that are difficult to electrify directly.
For Ren-Gas, securing a preferred technology supplier is aimed at providing greater consistency as its project pipeline expands. The company says its model combines Finland’s renewable electricity resources with methanation and district-heating integration to improve overall project economics.
“Ren-Gas has developed a fully European value chain for its first e-methane project in Tampere,” said Saara Kujala, chief executive of Nordic Ren-Gas. She added that reliable equipment suppliers such as Sunfire would help the company “scale production across its project portfolio”.
The partnership comes shortly after Ren-Gas announced an e-methane offtake agreement with avanca/Alternoil worth approximately €1 billion. The arrangement provides long-term demand for output from the Tampere facility and strengthens the commercial case for the project.
Sunfire sees the agreement as an opportunity to expand its presence in Finland’s developing hydrogen economy. Its technology is already being used at the country’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen project in Harjavalta.
The company is also positioning its recently launched HyLink Alkaline 23 system for future projects. Sunfire chief executive Nils Aldag said Ren-Gas’ decision reflected confidence in “our technology, our people, and our ability to deliver industrial-scale hydrogen projects”.
The agreement does not itself commit a specific volume of future electrolysis capacity. Instead, it establishes Sunfire as the preferred technology provider as individual Ren-Gas projects progress.
That distinction is important in Finland’s emerging hydrogen sector, where project developers are moving from individual demonstrations towards larger, integrated facilities linking renewable power, hydrogen, synthetic fuels and heat networks.
