Sunfire has agreed to deliver two 100 MW electrolyzer systems for renewable hydrogen projects in Spain, reinforcing the country’s position as a hydrogen industry hub. The first plant will be installed near Repsol’s industrial complex in Cartagena in partnership with Enagás Renovable; the second will be located at Petronor’s refinery in Muskiz (Bilbao), owned by Repsol and Kutxabank. Commissioning is targeted for 2029.

Each 100 MW facility will consist of ten 10 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser modules, integrated into existing refinery operations and connected to regional hydrogen infrastructure. Once operational, each site is expected to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year using renewable electricity, displacing grey‑hydrogen production and avoiding around 167,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually per plant.

Sunfire’s CEO, Nils Aldag, said Spain’s strong policy environment and resource base make it a key market for green hydrogen, and that Repsol’s repeat choice of the company’s technology confirms its scalability and reliability. The projects also support Spain’s 2030 electrolysis and decarbonisation goals, helping Repsol shift its refining and fuels portfolio toward lower‑carbon pathways and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The order builds on Sunfire’s earlier 10 MW pressurised alkaline system for the Basque Hydrogen project at the Port of Bilbao and a 100 MW contract with RWE in Lingen, Germany, underscoring the company’s role in the early‑stage build‑out of large‑scale hydrogen infrastructure across Europe.
