Voith Hydro is starting work to replace four generators and four Kaplan turbines, as well as the automation systems and the mechanical and electrical ancillary equipment at the Zvornik hydropower plant, situated on the River Drina in Serbia.
The work is being carried out as part of a EUR 65 million order from energy supplier Elektroprivreda Srbije received in autumn 2013.
The modernisation will increase the Zvornik plant’s output from 96 to 124 MW.
"Voith supplied two turbines to Zvornik back when the plant was built 50 years ago," said Dr Leopold Heninger, managing director of Voith Hydro.
"We are very pleased that we have once more gained the trust of Elektroprivreda Srbije to support the modernisation project."
Hydropower accounts for around 30% of Serbia’s power production, but there is considered to be good potential for further development.
