Waaree Transpower is investing around ₹192 crore in a new transformer manufacturing facility in India, adding capability for transformers rated up to 500 MVA and 400 kV.

The subsidiary of Waaree Energies plans to bring the facility into operation by April 2027. It will manufacture equipment across the 132 kV, 220 kV and 400 kV voltage classes, expanding the company’s ability to supply high-voltage transmission projects.

The investment comes as India undertakes a substantial expansion of its transmission network to accommodate rising electricity demand and increasing volumes of renewable generation. New transmission infrastructure will be required not only to connect large solar and wind projects, but also to integrate battery storage and move electricity between regions.

Waaree Transpower said the new plant will complement its existing transformer manufacturing operations and allow it to compete for larger and more technically demanding grid infrastructure projects.

The company currently has an order book of approximately ₹360 crore for execution during financial year 2026–27. The new capacity is expected to broaden its manufacturing range beyond its existing focus on power and distribution transformers and inverter-duty transformers used in renewable energy applications.

High-voltage transformers are a critical component of transmission infrastructure, stepping voltage levels up or down to enable efficient transfer of electricity across the grid. Their availability has become an increasingly important consideration as utilities and developers expand generation and transmission capacity.

Viren Doshi, director of Waaree Energies, said the investment reflected expectations for continued growth in India’s power infrastructure and demand for high-voltage transformation capacity.

The company also plans to use the expanded manufacturing base to support applications across renewable generation, battery energy storage and wider grid infrastructure.

With commissioning targeted for 2027, the facility will add domestic manufacturing capacity at a time when India is increasing investment in high-voltage transmission and seeking to strengthen the infrastructure needed to connect new generation to electricity demand centres.

The project represents a move by Waaree Transpower into higher-voltage and higher-capacity transformer manufacturing, alongside its established renewable-energy supply business.
