Wärtsilä has won an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build a 100 MW/100 MWh energy storage project for an unnamed customer in SE Asia.
The order includes supply and installation of Wärtsilä’s GEMS energy management software platform and GridSolv solution. The facility will be used for grid support purposes and will assist the region in the transition to renewable energy, the company said.
The order is similar in size to another contract announced by Wärtsilä in July 2019
In 2018, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) committed to meeting 23 per cent of its primary energy needs from renewables by 2025. The region is aiming to leverage its abundant wind and solar resources and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, especially as grid systems develop and economies grow.
