The European Commission has designated two Uniper Energy Storage hydrogen projects – Krummhörn and Epe – as Projects of Common Interest (PCI), unlocking faster permitting and the potential to apply for funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme.
Uniper has confirmed the status, highlighting the facilities’ role in Europe’s hydrogen ramp-up. Krummhörn in northwest Germany will develop two salt caverns with 430 GWh capacity linked to the national hydrogen core network and European Hydrogen Backbone, targeting first cavern operation by end-2036. Epe plans to convert existing gas caverns for 200 GWh flexibility in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The projects integrate with the planned European hydrogen infrastructure to balance renewables, ensure supply security and serve industrial demand. PCI recognition accelerates planning amid long lead times for cavern development.
Uniper Managing Director Doug Waters called the projects essential building blocks for reliable hydrogen supply but stressed the need for stable financial and regulatory support to trigger investment decisions. Both remain in early development as Uniper advances feasibility and market studies.
