Hungary has opened a tender offering 702 MVA of medium- and high-voltage grid capacity for new wind power projects, as the government seeks to accelerate wind development and diversify the country’s electricity supply.
The Hungarian Energy and Public Utilities Regulatory Office (MEKH) said developers can bid for capacity at nine network nodes across six districts. Grid connections could begin from 30 September 2030, with all projects required to connect no later than 30 September 2032.
The tender follows a nationwide market survey conducted by MEKH to assess expected grid connection requirements from wind developers and the readiness of proposed investments.
It is part of a broader change in Hungary’s energy policy introduced this year, under which wind power has been designated a strategic priority. Annual grid connection tenders are now intended to be reserved for wind projects, with the government targeting at least 4 GW of additional wind capacity by 2030.
The push comes as Hungary faces growing pressure to strengthen the resilience of its electricity system. During the summer, severe heat and drought reduced water levels in the Danube to exceptionally low levels, restricting the availability of cooling water for the Paks nuclear power plant. Several units were temporarily shut down or operated at reduced output.
Paks supplies around 40% of Hungary’s electricity generation, highlighting the risks associated with the country’s reliance on a small number of large generation sources.
Renewables have already become a larger part of the power mix, although growth has been dominated by solar. Solar generation accounted for around 27% of Hungary’s electricity mix in 2025, compared with 7% in 2020. Wind remained a much smaller contributor at about 2%.
The new grid allocation mechanism could therefore mark a shift in Hungary’s renewable strategy, giving wind developers a defined route to grid access while adding generation diversity to a system heavily dependent on nuclear and increasingly exposed to weather-related constraints.
