Egypt’s Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities Energy for the 1 GW Ras Shokeir Wind Project in the Red Sea Governorate.
The agreement provides the contractual framework for EETC to purchase electricity generated by the project, moving the development into a further stage of project implementation.
Ras Shokeir is planned across approximately 143 km2 in the Gulf of Suez, one of Egypt’s established high-quality wind resource areas. The project is being developed by Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities Energy, combining the renewable energy developer’s regional experience with Hassan Allam’s local infrastructure and development capabilities.
Once operational, the project is expected to add 1 GW of wind generation to Egypt’s electricity grid.
The PPA was signed by EETC chairperson Mona Rizk and Infinity Power co-founder and CEO Nayer Fouad, who also chairs Ras Shokeir Wind Energy Company.
The project is part of Egypt’s broader effort to increase renewable generation and reduce reliance on conventional power generation. The Gulf of Suez has become a major focus for wind development because of its strong and relatively consistent wind resource, with several large-scale projects planned or under development in the region.
For the power system, the addition of 1 GW of wind capacity will increase the contribution of variable renewable generation while reducing the carbon intensity of electricity supply. The project will also require appropriate transmission infrastructure to move generation from the Red Sea area to demand centres.
The PPA follows continuing investment in Egypt’s utility-scale renewable sector, where large wind and solar projects are being developed through partnerships between government entities and private developers.
Infinity Power said the project forms part of its ambition to reach 10 GW of operational renewable energy capacity by 2032. For Hassan Allam Utilities Energy, Ras Shokeir adds another large-scale renewable project to its development portfolio.
The next stages will involve progressing the project towards construction and eventual grid connection.
