Thistle Wind Partners has submitted the offshore consent application for its Bowdun Offshore Wind Farm to the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate, moving the fixed-bottom project a step closer to approval. The scheme is designed to deliver up to 1 GW of renewable power to the national grid, enough to meet the equivalent electricity needs of more than 1.2 million households.

Bowdun is also expected to generate a significant local economic boost, supporting more than 700 jobs in Scotland during its five-year construction phase and around 60 long-term roles through operations and maintenance. The offshore application now sits alongside the onshore submission lodged with Aberdeenshire Council in November 2025, meaning both elements of the project are now in determination.

Bowdun Project Director Ian Taylor said the application reflects substantial progress on a project intended not only to supply clean power but also to maximise economic value for Scotland through domestic supply chain spending, skilled jobs and a planned operations and maintenance base in the north-east. Since being established in 2022, TWP says it has already submitted four major consent applications across its ScotWind portfolio, underlining the pace at which it is advancing its offshore wind programme.

The project is another sign of Scotland’s continued push to expand large-scale offshore wind as it seeks to combine decarbonisation with regional industrial development.

For Bowdun, the next step is regulatory review, with the final outcome hinging on the Scottish Government’s assessment of both the offshore and onshore consents.
