Cemex Ventures, the venture capital arm of Cemex, has announced a new investment in Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions (WtEnergy), a startup converting non-recyclable waste and biomass into low-carbon syngas, clean hydrogen, and bioproducts. The funding aims to scale this technology for Cemex’s cement manufacturing, supporting its net-zero CO2 goal by 2050.
The investment builds on WtEnergy’s progress, including a €4.4 million (US$5.2 million) EU Innovation Fund grant with Cemex for waste-to-fuel tech and leadership in the €10 million (US$11.8 million) Horizon Europe HYIELD project at Cemex’s Alcanar plant in Spain. There, bio-residues will produce high-purity hydrogen, advancing circular economy solutions for heavy industry.
“WtEnergy perfectly embodies the type of solutions we aim to promote within our circular economy and clean energy strategy,” said Alfredo Carrato, Investment Manager at Cemex Ventures. “The advancement of technologies that can turn waste into clean fuels and low-carbon solutions is essential for the decarbonization of the construction sector.”
This aligns with Cemex’s commitment to its “Future in Action” program and its SBTi-validated 2030 roadmap, which emphasises alternative fuels with high biomass content to cut emissions across global clinker and cement operations.
