GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) has signed a main services agreement with Swedish engineering and project management group AFRY to support deployment of the BWRX‑300 small modular reactor (SMR) in Europe. The non‑exclusive deal will see AFRY provide engineering and advisory services that draw on its deep nuclear sector experience and regional footprint across the continent.
AFRY will support GVH with front‑end engineering, design studies and advisory work tailored to European regulatory and industrial contexts, while also assisting with preparation of a licence application for the BWRX‑300 to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM). The collaboration is aimed at helping Swedish and wider European industry integrate into the SMR value chain, leveraging AFRY’s presence in energy, infrastructure and nuclear projects.
GVH said the agreement is intended to build a broader Swedish and European industrial ecosystem around the BWRX‑300, going beyond the reactor itself to include local supply‑chain development and long‑term project execution capability. Sweden’s strong base of heavy engineering and nuclear competence is viewed as a strategic asset as governments across Europe look to deploy smaller, more modular nuclear plants alongside renewables.
The BWRX‑300, a 300 MWe boiling‑water‑reactor SMR, is already progressing in several markets. The first unit is under construction at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site in Canada, with completion targeted by the end of the decade, while the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing Tennessee Valley Authority’s application to build the first BWRX‑300 in the United States at Clinch River, Tennessee.
The agreement with AFRY positions GVH to offer a more regionally integrated delivery model in Europe, pairing its standardised reactor design with local engineering expertise and regulatory support.
