Goldwind has agreed to supply 13 GW165-6.0MW permanent magnet direct-drive (PMDD) wind turbines for the expansion of the Metristepe wind farm in TĂ¼rkiye, adding 78 MW of generation capacity to the existing site.

The agreement was signed with Inova Elektrik Ăœretim Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., the wind energy arm of Gulsan Holding. Following the extension, Metristepe’s total installed capacity will reach 118 MW.

The project is located in Bilecik Province, where the site’s hilly terrain presents conditions relevant to turbine selection and operation. Metristepe has been operating commercially since 2011, when its first 40 MW phase began supplying electricity.

The extension will use Goldwind’s GW165-6.0MW platform, which combines a 165m rotor with a 6 MW permanent magnet direct-drive generator. Direct-drive technology eliminates the conventional gearbox, reducing the number of mechanical components in the drivetrain and potentially simplifying maintenance.

Goldwind said the turbine platform was selected for its operating record and performance in conditions comparable with those at the Turkish site. The company also claims availability of more than 98%, although the figure represents Goldwind’s stated performance rather than a project-specific result.

Adding new turbines to an established operating site can also allow developers to build on existing infrastructure, grid connections and operational experience, although the extent of infrastructure reuse at Metristepe was not disclosed.

The project adds to Goldwind’s activity in TĂ¼rkiye, where the company is supplying turbine technology to a market that has continued to expand its wind generation fleet.

For Gulsan Holding, the extension increases output from a project that has been generating electricity for more than 15 years. The combination of an established wind farm and newer turbine technology also provides a direct comparison between different generations of wind technology at the same location.

Once the extension is completed, Metristepe will have nearly three times the capacity of its original 40 MW phase, increasing the contribution of the Bilecik site to TĂ¼rkiye’s renewable electricity supply.
