Iran invites Czech firms

Iran will invite Czech firms to take part in completion of the Bushehr nuclear power plant if Czech company ZVVZ Milevsko supplies air conditioning for the plant.

MHI receives fgd order

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and FLS miljo won a $200 million turnkey order from TXU Europe Power of the UK to install four large-size flue gas desulpherisation (FGD) units at West Burton power station. Completion is due for autumn 2003.

Calpine plans gas plant

Calpine Corp will build a gas-fired power plant of 250 to 500 MWe in Alberta, Canada in two years, as Alberta deregulates its power sector.

JBIC gives loan to KEDO

The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) agreed a loan of $1.1 billion with Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organisation (KEDO), to fund the two 1000 MWe light water reactors for North Korea.

TXU Europe buys Dutch CHP

TXU Europe completed its $7.4 million acquisition of Dutch CHP company, Nedalo BV, including the 25 per cent of subsidiary Nedalo UK it does not already own.

Repsol-YPF in 400 MWe Boost

Spain’s Repsol-YPF formed a joint venture with Pluspetrol Energy, the Argentinian oil company, to boost generation by 400 MWe to 1000 MWe at three gas-fired plants. Installation of a second CCGT at Pluspetrol’s 115 MWe San Miguel Tucuman plant will take capacity to 375 MWe next year, and will replace diesel with Bolivian gas at the 40 MWe Ave Fenix plant, increasing capacity there by 145MWe. Capacity at the Tucuman plant at El Bracho will be boosted to 430MWe.

Duke’s deals worth $1 BN

Duke Energy North America (DENA) is starting construction of three new merchant generation projects totaling 1500 MWe. In another deal, DENA announced the sale of its 78.5 per cent interest in the 500 MWe Hidalgo Energy facility to an affiliate of Calpine for $235 million.

German boost to Renewables

A subsidies law for renewable energy boosted financial prospects for solar power companies in Germany. The law guarantees tariffs for renewables, including US¢51/kWh for solar.

Illinois plant

Reliant Energy has begun a 340 MWe gas-fired merchant peaking unit in Illinois. The plant, in Shelby County 180 miles from Chicago, will have eight GE turbines and is to begin operation in June.

Anker’s away

Anker Energy Corporation will build two power plants in West Virginia. A $250 million plant in Upshur county will use waste coal, and a $120 million plant in Wayne county will use natural gas.
