A community-led battery storage project in Oxfordshire has exceeded its initial £500,000 investment target, highlighting growing public backing for locally owned energy infrastructure.

Low Carbon Hub confirmed that more than 270 investors have committed over £640,000 towards installing a battery at the Ray Valley Solar site, reaching the milestone around a month ahead of the 26 June funding deadline. The share offer, launched on 26 March, remains open and is now in an over-raising phase, increasing the proportion of the project that will be community-owned.

The scheme centres on Ray Valley Solar, a large community-owned solar park developed by Low Carbon Hub in 2022, with generation capacity sufficient to power around 7,000 homes. The planned battery system, with a total cost of approximately £1.8 million, will be partly financed through community investment, with the remainder covered by loans.

The project reflects a wider push to address intermittency and grid constraints affecting solar generation. At present, excess electricity produced during peak sunshine periods cannot always be used or exported efficiently, resulting in curtailed output and reduced revenues. By storing surplus generation and releasing it during periods of higher demand, the battery is expected to improve both system efficiency and project economics.

Low Carbon Hub estimates the system could prevent around 809 MWh of renewable electricity from being wasted annually. It is also projected to deliver an additional 102 tonnes of carbon savings each year by displacing more carbon-intensive generation at peak times.

The initiative forms part of a broader portfolio of 56 community-owned renewable projects across Oxfordshire, and underscores continued interest in community energy models as a mechanism for local investment, grid flexibility and decarbonisation.
