EUROPE • MARKET ANALYSIS The European market for micro combined heat and power systems is ready to take off, according to a report from Frost and Sullivan. A rapid upsurge in sales of micro CHP systems presages sharp growth, the company believes. From fewer than 2000 units in 2000, the market will reach 500 000 by 2010, worth $2 billion.

Such growth will signify a change in residential patterns of energy generation and consumption. Internal combustion technology is likely to dominate the market for the next two years but Stirling engines looks likely to take off after 2003. By the end of the decade, however, fuel cells will also make a significant contribution.
