Canada has announced $468,000 in federal funding for the Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap project, a national plan aimed at accelerating deep geothermal development. The work is being led by the Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition, with the Cascade Institute serving as secretariat.
The roadmap will bring together industry, researchers, Indigenous partners and governments to map technology opportunities and R&D priorities for next-generation geothermal in Canada. Ottawa says the aim is to help turn the country’s geology and drilling expertise into new clean energy projects, jobs and long-term energy security.
The funding comes through Natural Resources Canada’s Energy Innovation Program, which supports clean energy technologies that can help maintain a reliable and affordable power system during the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Officials said conventional geothermal can already provide steady heat and power, while next-generation systems could expand that potential to more regions across Canada.
The federal government says the roadmap is intended to help unlock investment and grow a domestic geothermal sector.
