On 26 May Hitachi Energy signed contracts with Statnett, the Norwegian power system operator, to deliver eco-efficient grid connection solutions in the greater Oslo area. These solutions are intended to enhance the reliability and availability of electricity supply for domestic and business energy users in and around Norway’s capital, while advancing the country’s net zero goals. The project is Norway’s first deployment of a transmission grid connection solution featuring SF6-free EconiQ. The collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector.
The population of Oslo is expected to increase 33 % to 1.6 million by 2030. Statnett’s grid expansion and modernisation project is intended to transport 60% more electricity to meet this growing demand and ensure the grid has a sustained, secure supply when consumption is at its peak.
Hitachi Energy is to install two 420 kV grid connection solutions with a compact footprint based on SF6–free EconiQ gas-insulated switchgear. This technology is said to offer the highest efficiency while minimising total life cycle costs and CO2 footprint.
While Europe is leading the adoption of SF6-free solutions driven by the commitment of utilities and regulators to climate action, in Norway Statnett has pioneered the deployment of SF6-free GIS, a significant milestone on its journey to Net Zero by 2050.
