E2S Power and SNC-Lavalin have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaboratively explore the potential for converting end-of-life fossil fuel-fired power plants into clean energy facilities by deploying utility-scale thermal energy storage solutions.

This non-binding collaboration has the advantages of addressing the rapidly growing energy storage market while giving a second life to valuable power infrastructure and transitioning local economies to clean energy.

E2S Power and SNC-Lavalin will work with utilities and power generators in North America to evaluate and offer optimised integrated thermal energy solutions for their existing plants and facilities being phased out.

“North America has more than 200 GW of coal-fuelled capacity that may be decommissioned in the coming years in the transition to carbon neutrality. E2S Power offers a solution to ensure security of supply while preserving important assets and power plant jobs,” commented Dr Sasha Savic, E2S Power CEO.

“New energy storage technology is revolutionising the energy system … combining E2S’ solutions that extend the life cycle of current infrastructure and our global engineering expertise, we’ll introduce new technologies to deliver carbon-free, sustainable utilities solutions,” said Nick Johnson, VP Power, Grid & Industrial Solutions, SNC-Lavalin.
