The Besicorp Empire Development Co is seeking authorisation to construct an integrated power plant and newsprint recycling facility in the City of Rensselaer, New York State. The plant is to be built at a site currently owned by BASF Corp.
The project will involve construction of a combined cycle cogeneration power station fired with natural gas. The plant will provide around 500MW of power for sale externally while producing both electricity and steam for the newsprint recycling facility. The latter will be capable of reprocessing over 400 000 tonnes of newsprint each year, producing 300 000 tonnes of paper for reuse.
The plant requires environmental reviews by the New York State Department of Public Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation before it can proceed. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2002.
