SSE has announced plans to build a 2GW gas fired power plant on the site of its decommissioned Ferrybridge C coal-fired power station which closed in March 2016.
SSE is launching a consultation process on the proposal for the new plant, designated Ferrybridge D, in the coming weeks and expects to submit an application for a development consent order to the UK secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy in the first quarter of 2019.
SSE project development manager Jim Lawrie commented: “The Ferrybridge C coal station played a key part in delivering the energy needed to support supply for the UK for over 50 years. The development of a new power station at the site marks the next step in our commitment to invest in the area.”
SSE is currently working on plans for the demolition of Ferrybridge C, with work expected to begin during 2018. The company owns a 50 % stake in the adjacent Ferrybridge Multifuel I and II energy from waste projects. The 68MW Multifuel I plant is currently operating. SSE made a final investment decision on the 70 MW Multifuel II unit in 2016 following the conferring of planning permission the same year.
