SSE’s combined Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva, a 17.3 MW wind farm in Puglia, southern Italy, is now operational and exporting energy into the local grid, marking the delivery of the company’s first Italian renewable electricity asset.
This milestone for SSE means the wind farm now begins delivering under the long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreement signed with Microsoft in 2024, securing a route to market for the renewable energy generated.
Under the power purchase agreement, the renewable electricity produced at the wind farm will support Microsoft’s carbon reduction strategy. Â
Reaching commercial operations at Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva also marks a significant milestone in SSE’s growth in Italy. Construction of the five-turbine wind farm began in early 2025. Around 70 construction roles were supported at the project during peak delivery, boosting the local economy and supply chain in the Puglia region.
The start of commercial operations at the wind farm marks the delivery of SSE’s first operational renewable energy asset in Italy, as the company continues to advance a secured pipeline of more than 600 MW of onshore wind developments in the country. Delivery of its first renewable electricity asset in Italy also represents another step forward in what SSE describes as its growing renewables portfolio across southern Europe. The company’s operational onshore wind capacity in the region now stands at 109 MW, with a further 55 MW under construction across three sites in Spain and Italy, including a 10 MW wind farm project currently under construction in the Puglia area.
