American Superconductor and Wisconsin Public Service Corporation have installed multiple superconducting magnetic energy storage (D-SMES) units at electrical substations in a 320 km transmission loop.

The system will increase power reliability and capacity by acting as virtual generators to instantaneously inject large quantities of power into the grid when needed. This installation is the world’s first commercial application of superconductor technology as an integral part of an electric power grid. The SMES components are housed in a mobile trailer and attached to transformers at utility substations.
