Ecowende has launched a trial with Vestas to test red-coated blades on seven turbines at Hollandse Kust West wind farm. The trial investigates whether red blades improve visibility to birds and reduce collision risks compared to traditional grey blades. The distinct colour is designed to create a visible smear effect, which is thought to help birds detect the blades more effectively. After considering various colours, red was chosen for its durability and resistance to overheating. This initiative is part of a broader ecological strategy led by Ecowende alongside partners Waardenburg Ecology, DHI, and Robin Radar to protect seabirds.

The trial requires specialised production, transport, and installation coordination to ensure red blades are evenly distributed across the site. Vestas is responsible for supplying, delivering, and commissioning 52 V236-15.0 MW turbines for the wind farm. Ecowende and its research partners will evaluate the effectiveness of red blades alongside other measures like adaptive curtailment and bird corridors to safeguard birdlife, aiming to set new ecological standards in offshore wind.

This initiative reflects a growing emphasis on ecological considerations in offshore wind developments, and Ecowende aims to share knowledge to help minimise impacts on bird populations while advancing renewable energy.
