Digital infrastructure company Equinix has signed India’s first power purchase agreement with renewable energy provider CleanMax to develop a 33 MW captive power plant in Maharashtra, combining 26.4 MWp solar and 6.6 MW wind capacity.
The project will come online in phases through 2025 to supply 100% renewable energy for Equinix’s Mumbai International Business Exchange (IBX) data centres, addressing surging AI-driven power demand. The deal marks Equinix’s 23rd global PPA, contributing over 3.1 million MWh annually across nine countries once fully operational.
Equinix Managing Director India Manoj Paul highlighted the partnership’s role in delivering sustainable power while supporting India’s renewable targets, where the country ranks fourth globally for capacity additions. CleanMax Managing Director Kuldeep Jain called it a “milestone step” toward net-zero digital infrastructure.
The initiative responds to data centre operators’ urgent need for reliable green power amid rapid AI expansion, using PPAs to scale renewables without grid dependency. Equinix’s broader sustainability efforts include $77.5 million invested in 2023 energy efficiency upgrades, cutting consumption by 66,862 MWh and improving global PUE by 8.8%.
CleanMax, backed by Brookfield with over 2 GW of assets serving 400+ clients, was selected after rigorous global evaluation. The Maharashtra plant leverages captive generation to bypass transmission constraints, while CleanMax eyes further decarbonisation for Equinix’s planned AI-ready facilities across India.
This deal underscores Asia’s growing role in corporate renewable procurement, with C&I PPAs accelerating grid relief and local clean energy deployment for hyperscale digital infrastructure.
