The Alamo City Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bexar County, Texas, has officially moved into construction, with OCI Energy and CPS Energy marking the start of work on what will be one of the largest standalone battery projects in the region. The 120 MW / 480 MWh facility is designed to support San Antonio’s grid during periods of peak demand and improve how power is timed and delivered.

Once operational in 2027, the battery will shift electricity from times of lower demand and lower prices to times of higher stress on the system. OCI Energy developed and financed the project and will retain ownership under a long-term storage capacity agreement, while CPS Energy will have operational control and dispatch the facility to serve the region.

The project is backed by a team of leading players: ING is providing construction financing, LG Energy Solution Vertech is supplying the BESS technology, and Elgin Power Solutions is serving as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

Officials from all three organisations highlighted the project as a key step toward a more resilient, reliable grid that can integrate more renewables and meet the city’s growing power needs.

The Alamo City BESS underscores Texas’ ongoing push to pair large‑scale generation with flexible storage so that cleaner, cheaper power can be used when it is most needed.
